Chapter Nineteen
Ellie
I scrubbed the same dish for what felt like the thousandth time. I wanted to scream, but if I did, I knew cook Lind would simply give me another dreadful task. I tried to be kind to her, but it seemed like she was forever determined to remain miserable. There was a commotion upstairs, followed-up by the return of the housemaid, Tam, who I'd seen at every meal, as she brought the food we had prepared up to the ladies of the house.
âMiss!â the maid shouted, and I stopped and turned around at her voice.
âGood Ancients, Tam. What is all this about?â Lind hissed.
âMiss, do you know how to style hair?â she asked me, ignoring the cook. I thought she was incredibly brave.
âYesââ
âGoodâyou are needed in the ladiesâ room. Their attendant is ill, and they need someone to style their hair before the Prince leaves for Embra.â
âWhat?â
âThey are riding out this morning, and everyone is gathering to bid the royalty farewell. The ladies wish to make an impression.â
I rolled my eyes. I wiped off my rather shriveled hands from being in water far too long and looked at Lind, who motioned for me to follow Tam without so much as a word.
I had never been up to the top floor of the main house. It was indeed a beautiful manor. Bright rugs and dangling chandeliers reminded me a little of my castle in Solea, and I yearned to be back home. I hoped we wouldn't run into Lady Travain. I hadn't seen her in a while and didn't wish to change that. We walked up the large staircase, and I waited outside the room as Tam knocked.
âYes?â a rather pretty girl asked. Her eyes were dark brown with hair a few shades lighter, which truly suited her complexion. Indeed, the Prince would think her a beautyâshe was. I didn't know what I could do to enhance that, but I would try.
âThis kitchen maid is good with hair.â Tam pointed to my hair, which I had braided and twisted atop my head to keep it out of the way while I worked in the kitchens. Bea and I had practiced different hairstyles on each other, growing up, and on ourselves as well. It reminded me of being with Bea, who I missed dreadfully.
âYou did your hair?â the girl asked with a very high-pitched voice.
âYes,â I nodded, looking at the ground.
âWhat is your name?â
I wondered at first if the high pitch of her voice was because she had been surprised, but as she continued to speak, I realized it was just her voice. I tried not to wince as she reached pitch levels which I didn't think had yet been discovered.
âEllie,â I said, looking back up. The girl looked back into the room, then at me.
âOkay, come in. Thank you, Tam; you can go now.â She waved Tam off, who curtsied and hurried down the stairs. âWe only have an hour till we need to leave to make it to the farewell party.
